Sculptor, visual arts teacher, and Master of Arts Pekka Kaikkonen is our Artist of the Month for August. He drew inspiration for the works currently on display from the architecture of the Italian town of Grammichele.
“In August 2015, I visited the town of Grammichele in Sicily. Built in 1693, the town features a circular urban layout. The expansive, hexagonal central square, Piazza Carafa, serves as the focal point of the setting. Main streets radiate outwards from the square, while cross-streets intersect rhythmically around it, following the hexagonal form. Grammichele is one of the few ‘ideal cities’ of 17th-century urban planning in the world to have remained largely in its original state.”
